The Castle stands on top of the hill at Mow Cop, on the Cheshire/ Staffordshire border. It is believed to have been built for Joseph Wilbraham of Rode Hall in 1746, by local stone-masons John and Ralph Harding as a summerhouse for entertaining guests.

In 1923 the castle and surrounding land was bought from the late Sir Philip Baker-Wilbraham and the Bishop of Derby, who were the lords of the manor at that time, by Mr Joe Lovatt for quarrying.

There then ensued a legal battle between the people of Mow Cop and
Mr Lovatt in order to halt the quarrying.
Finally in June 1937, the people of Mow Cop had their way, and the deeds for the castle and surrounding land were handed over to the National Trust
